One of the foundational aspects of the CU experience is Chapel. For decades, students, faculty, and staff would gather in various places across the city, and eventually the campus itself, to worship together. In the early years following its founding, this was the Wealthy Street theatre. In the 1980’s as the campus continued to expand, this looked like gathering in the student commons, the small chapel space in the Seminary building, and eventually in Mol Arena.
This was the norm for numerous years, a tabernacle-in-the-wilderness type of experience. Never having a true, dedicated space to worship, learn, and grow together. This was until former University President, Joseph Stowell, had a vision and passion to bring a permanent structure and space to campus where all could come to be fully immersed in the act of worship.
Together, he, the board of trustees, and the university’s advancement team began a multi-year journey of campaigning and fundraising for this space, a space that would eventually become Christ Chapel. This addition to the campus marked a pivotal milestone for the community, and to dedicate and honor the holiness and reverence of the space, a series of works were commissioned. From the orientate rugged cross sculpture, the vast and immersive stained glass series, and a video series, we set out to tell the story of Christ Chapel.
